Senior Ensembles are instrument specific groups, such as Senior Flute Ensemble, Senior Violin Ensemble, Senior Guitar Ensemble, Senior Viola Choir and the Ottawa Suzuki Cello Orchestra, who perform repertoire written for the genre as well as arrangements of masterworks of the classical repertoire. The goals for group ensembles include skill building, intonation, rhythmic precision and performance training at a senior level. These initiatives provide an opportunity for advanced students to work together in a team work project and to build leadership skills through music making. The focus is on each individual developing a sense of commitment to individual excellence with the ultimate goal of high caliber orchestra performance. Training is provided through regular Saturday coaching as well as rehearsals with SuzukiMusic faculty. Students are also offered performance opportunities in the greater Ottawa community.
Optional Senior Programs
Optional Enrichment Classes
Building on the skills learned in our Optional Enrichment courses from 2017-2018, our senior violin, viola and cello students will have the opportunity to work with Laura Nerenberg to discover their musical sound and expression through improvisation. With Creative Ability Development, students will benefit from 6 classes with Laura throughout the year, where they will explore sounds, rhythms, melodic and harmonic lines, and much more all while having fun on their instrument. Throughout these classes, the students will be working towards hosting a concert to showcase their new found skills to friends and family.
Group Class Mentor Program
We’ve designed a new program to help teens mentor young musicians in our school and gain their community volunteer hours at the same time. Interested students are paired up with a group class of younger students to help mentor, lead and demonstrate for the younger students in the class. A Suzuki Teen Mentoring, certification course is also offered every other year.
When available senior students are also offered a variety of opportunities to participate in various (instrument related) workshops, outreach concerts, guest teachers, master classes, ensemble, career and school counselling, and artist appreciation.
A concert featuring our Senior Ensembles students is held annually in the spring.
